Put aside the same question everyone else is asking. Don't get stuck in a question someone else is asking to solve the problem …Go around that obvious question and look at the goal and ask tons of questions about the goal, everything related to the goal -- some may seem like silly questions but ask them anyways.
Draw lots of diagrams, take lots of paths, lots of notes and go in a many directions.
Once you’ve done all this, settle down to solve the problem — on second thought, never stop asking questions, continue the questions as you work through to the solution — the answer will be brilliant!
I can give this advise because I am one of those Creative Directors that ask many questions before I start a project. I look at the goal from all sides - including inside, outside and all around with a twist! I can be like an inquisitive four-year-old, but I have resources so it’s not as bad as it sounds — I do much independent research. I like to know as much as possible about all aspects of product, company and goals… It helps to put it all together. What I am learning from one project often aids in another project. All this questioning eventually ends up being surprising worthwhile. The more I know the quicker I can come up with perfect creative solution for solutions. Asking the right questions and carefully listening… I am amazed that these skills are not used more and more amazed at who is not using them. How many questions do you ask before you start a project?
